Dietetic Internship Placement

Last Modified Date:
06/29/2009

Students completing the Dietetics program are required to complete two additional steps to obtain the registered dietitian credential- participate in a dietetic internship, and then pass the national registration examination for dietitians.  The UA DPD  tracks the number of students who are accepted into dietetic internships, as well as those that pass the registration exam.

Data collection: April and November

Target population: NSC graduates applying for dietetic internships

A computer matching process is utilized for dietetic internship placement.  The two computer matching dates are in April and November.  The Commission on Accreditation of Dietetics Education  (CADE) provides match/no match lists to DPD directors to track student placement.  Students are not required to release their names at match time, so DPDs are not necessarily able to monitor each student applying.  However, the UA DPD makes every effor to contact all students directly regarding placement, and generally collects placement information on all UA applicants.

Findings

The table below shows dietetic internship placement rates for the past ten years.  The ten-year average placement rate is 76%.  Overall the placement rate has been decling due to several factors.  The UA DPD program and DPD programs nationally have seen a dramatic rise in enrollment.  The number of students applying to dietetic internships has far outpaced the rise in the number of internship openings.  In fact, while applicant numbers increase, internship openings have decreased slightly.  The American Dietetic Association (ADA) is currently reviewing this issue and formulating possible strategies to manage the large number of applicants.
