Animal Hazard Program

Target Population: U of A faculty, staff and students who come in contact with research-related animals or animal bi-products.

Participation Rate: 1,012 program participants currently identified

A Federally mandated program administered by the CHS Occupational Health unit providing U of A faculty, staff and students who come in contact with research-related animals or animal bi-products with risk screening, immunization administration and health status monitoring.

Outcomes Measured

  • Provide Federally-mandated Animal Hazard Program and assure monitoring and appropriate immunization administration for campus community members who come in contact with research-related animals or animal bi-products.

Findings

The Campus Health Service, Occupational Health unit has screened, immunized or monitored 1,012 faculty, staff or students in the 2004/2005 fiscal year.

Changes Made on Basis of Findings

The CHS Occupational Health unit administers a Federally-mandated program to 1,012 (currently identified) U of A faculty, staff and students who come in contact with research-related animals or animal bi-products.
Dramatically enhanced the relative health and well-being of program participants who otherwise might have suffered exposure related illnesses/allergies associated with their work/study.
Continued to build database that will help to assure compliance with Federal audit of federally funded research (Note: excellent audit resulted in summer of 2004)
