Overview: 

The School of Dance undergraduate program is unique in that if offers an integrated curriculum of ballet, modern and jazz dance through technique and performance. Additionally, the core curriculum for BFA Dance majors includes ballet repertoire, music for dance, production and career planning.  Additional coursework is offered in Dance Afrikana, Tap, pointe, and Musical Theater vocal training.  The senior capstone project (DNC498) may be in the areas of performance, choreography, teaching, dance technology, production, research or a multi-disciplinary study. One additional core course is required in somatics such as Pilates, yoga, or dance injury prevention.

Additional units required for the 80 units in the BFA include 6 units MUS and 3 units ART (any area other than DNC including TAR, MUS, FTV, ART )

UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA SCHOOL OF DANCE BFA ENTRANCE CRITERIA
Students who are accepted for the BFA program are screened through auditions conducted by the faculty using the following criteria:

· Minimum 5 years study in one or more of the following training programs: arts conservatory, affiliate school of a company, arts magnet high school dance program, reputable dance studio with performing opportunities

· The ability to transfer knowledge fluently between all three concentration areas in our program, Ballet, Modern and Jazz

· A strong ballet base

· Ability to demonstrate strength and/or have notable attributes in all of the following areas: technical facility, knowledge of movement vocabulary that extends beyond a foundational level, and clearly articulated footwork

· A well-proportioned physique

· A well-toned and conditioned body (athletic shape)

· Accuracy of line and body placement

· Musicality

· Learning potential (the ability to readily embrace new concepts)

· Performing experience suggested

Due to the fact that the BFA is a professional degree, a final but essential point of our criteria requires each applicant accepted to appear physically and mentally capable of completing the rigors of the four-year program. Ultimately the faculty chooses dancers who are disciplined, know how to work, can stay focused and on task, are not timid and those who best exhibit a level of professionalism which will allow them to be competitive in the professional job market upon graduation.

Student Learning Outcomes:

At the end of the degree program, students will be able to:

1.    Perform at a professional level in diverse styles of dance including ballet, jazz and/or modern dance.

2.    Articulate a personal aesthetic through courses in improvisation and choreography

3.    Recognize and explain the multi-layered relationships between music and dance

4.    Comprehend and experience the anatomical function of the dancer's body through course work in biomechanics, dance injury prevention and Pilates

5.    Understand and develop scholarly research techniques and be familiar with the written and verbal skills necessary and appropriate for the field

6.    Develop a global perspective about dance history and diverse forms of dance.

7.    Understand a variety of dance production values which enhance performance

8.    Demonstrate citizenship skills which lead to continued service to the community and the field of dance through a variety of philanthropic activities at the local, regional and national levels

Assessment Activities: 

Direct Assessment Activities:

 

Assessment is a daily activity in the field of dance and is demonstrated through group and individual feedback from all of the faculty in all classes. Many Direct Assessment Activities overlap several student outcomes.

 

1.    Outcome 1:

a.    Students are required to complete a minimum of 24 units of dance technique for the degree program. Faculty monitor students on a frequent and regular basis in all the technique classes through individual corrections and requesting students to demonstrate their comprehension of class material through verbal and physical responses. In addition, faculty mentor students individually outside of class through scheduled appointments.

b.    A similar form of assessment takes place through the ensemble coursework (DNC343 Dance Ensemble). Students are required to audition for every piece of choreography in which they perform. The assessment protocol includes the entire rehearsal process leading up to, and including, performances. A number of venues are created each year to insure that all students have an opportunity to perform publicly. All faculty are involved in grading all students enrolled in ensemble courses (i.e., performance).

c.    As per the University guidelines, students are required to maintain a 3.0 GPA in order to qualify for a scholarship. Scholarships are reviewed at the end of each semester and are awarded based on the faculty assessment of the student’s progress in the program.

2.    Outcome 2: Students are able to develop a personal aesthetic with regard to dance choreography through courses in Improvisation (DNC145) and choreography (DNC245 A&B, DNC445 A&B). Student choreographers are required to select a faculty mentor who monitors the progress made in their creative work. Each semester, the faculty adjudicate student work for performance on the UA Dance concert series. This concept is further assessed through the student’s performance of choreography by faculty and works by noteworthy and historical choreographers.

3.    Outcome 3:

a.    Students are able to recognize and articulate the relationships between music and dance through information and practical application of these ideas in DNC243, Creating with Rhythm and Movement, DNC495A Teaching Methods of Dance and DNC496E Seminar in Music and Dance Collaborations. Assessment in these classes includes written assignments, quizzes, tests, class projects and group work using cooperative learning techniques.

b.    Students can also apply this information through the experience of dancing to live music in technique class and during performances.

c.    Students can explore the relationships between music and dance further with independent studies in music with Dr. Knosp, Music Director for Dance.

4.    Outcome 4: Information – Students receive critical information on the anatomical function of the dancer’s body through coursework in DNC302 Dance Injury Prevention, DNC303 Yoga for Dance, DNC555 Biomechanics, and DNC294A, DNC301A and DNC394C Pilates. They are then able to directly apply this information during technique class and through performances and the faculty are able to assess the student’s understanding of these ideas in these somatics practices.

5.    Outcome 5: Scholarly research techniques are specifically addressed and assessed through formal papers and projects in DNC200 Dance History, DNC400 Dance and World Culture, DNC446 Careers in Dance, and DNC455 Biomechanics. Students may also elect to pursue a research project for DNC498 Senior Capstone.

6.    Outcome 6: Students develop a global perspective about dance history and diverse forms of dance through coursework in DNC200 Dance History and DNC400 Dance and World Culture. They are able to experience diverse forms of dance through DNC177 C&D, Dance Afrikana.

7.    Outcome 7: Students learn a variety of production techniques and values through DNC349B Production project and are assessed by faculty through their work as stage crew during performances

8.    Outcome 8: While there is no formal coursework in social responsibility, our students are active as volunteers for many non-profit organizations, festivals and fund raising events for the university, the Tucson community and nationally. These volunteer opportunities include supporting the Arizona Jazz Dance Showcase, performances in the community to support non-profit organizations such as the Tucson Symphony, the Tucson Museum of Art, Bens Bells, the Humane Society, American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, Children’s Cancer Research and the Jewish Cultural Center. Students have also participated in special events and fund raising for the department and the university. All performance activities including special philanthropic events do weigh into scholarship consideration.
