Natural Resources: Undergraduate Programs

Overview: 

Faculty in the School of Natural Resources (SNR) focus on the information needed for management and conservation of natural ecosystems. Programs of study in SNR prepare undergraduate students to be informed citizens, self-learners, life-long learners, and candidates for careers in agencies and organizations that deal with planning, conservation, and management of natural resources, including water, vegetation, wildlife, fisheries, and wildlands.

Expected Learning Outcomes: 

Core Curriculum Outcomes

Faculty expect students to be knowledgeable in general education, basic science, interdisciplinary natural resource subjects, and in subjects specific to their selected professional focus. The SNR Core Curriculum (8 courses) is designed to integrate subjects of importance to all students in renewable natural resource fields. Learning outcomes for the Core Curriculum (and targeted courses) are provided below. Each outcome ends with an indication of which core courses focus on that outcome. Eventually faculty will complete a similar list of outcomes expected in courses outside of the Core Curriculum.

  • Acquire basic knowledge of ecological principles (e.g., energy flow, material cycling, competition, predation, mutualism), identify current ecological challenges facing natural resource managers, and use ecological principles to develop potential integrated solutions to problems in natural resource management.   • Describe how social, political, and economic forces impact management of renewable natural resources (RNR 200/480/485); and explain why there generally are trade-offs between various objectives in natural resources management. (RNR 200/384/485)
  • Identify the major land management agencies responsible for stewardship of renewable natural resources, the key historical conditions that lead to the creation of these agencies, and the primary mandates of each of these agencies. (RNR 200/480)
  • Conduct, interpret, and present basic statistical analyses of field and laboratory data, develop a research sampling design, and demonstrate the ability to design and conduct monitoring projects in the field. (RNR 271/321)
  • Write professional reports in the style appropriate for the field of specialization, and demonstrate clear communication of scientific concepts and analytical arguments based on synthesis of published information and use of critical thinking. (RNR 316, 480, 485) Demonstrate oral and computer-based presentation skills (e.g., use of html and construction of slides, graphs, tables and other visualization tools). (RNR 271, 485)
  • Identify behaviors of ethical professionals, and describe links between these behaviors and professional accomplishments. (RNR 200, 384, 480)
  • Use taxonomic keys to identify a variety of plant and animal taxa. (RNR 202)
  • Identify potential career paths and responsibilities within the variety of professions related to renewable natural resources, and demonstrate awareness and appreciation for the importance of collaboration for stewardship of renewable natural resources, including inter_agency collaboration and collaboration between scientists and managers. (RNR 200/384/480/485)
