Evaluation of Senior Capstone Course

To date, the assessment--through the review of written work completed as part of HIST396a, the senior capstone course--has been used to evaluate course content throughout the curriculum.

Findings

Qualitative review of student work in the department's capstone course reveal frequent deficiencies in reading comprehension, research, writing, and the interpretation of evidence.

Changes Made on Basis of Findings

The department is devising a "gateway" methodologies course to be piloted in the fall of 2005. It is designed to improve students' skills in reading comprehension, research, writing, and the interpretation of evidence so as to improve their performance in all history courses, including HIST 396a in particular.
