Latin American Studies: Undergraduate Programs

Evaluate performance in internships and study abroad programs

Findings

An increasing number of majors are doing internships and participating in study-abroad programs and summer research activities. For example, three LAS majors had summer research funding from LAS or the Honors College in 2003 and six students participated in Study Abroad programs. Eight undergraduate students did internships during academic year 2003-04

Changes Made on Basis of Findings

In 2004, CLAS initiated a new requirement for the major: a “Latin American Immersion Experience,” consisting of a study-abroad experience in Latin America and/or an international internship activity (several which are based in the Tucson or the Arizona/Sonora border region). In recent years, over 50% of graduating LAS majors have studied abroad in Latin America or Spain.

A scholarship endowment fund is being established which will help provide funding for one or two undergraduate research scholarships each summer
